The David Nieper Competition for Schools
The David Nieper Schools Competition is designed to give young people a window onto the world of fashion and manufacturing and to inspire our young people to develop their creative talents for the future.
David Nieper has celebrated 50 years in Alfreton and is well known for a longstanding commitment to British manufacture, for looking after employees and supporting the local community and reducing its carbon footprint.
A British fashion house with an enviable reputation for quality and inspired designs, customers from all over Europe buy directly from the studios in Derbyshire by telephone or online and love that it’s ‘Made in Britain’!
BBC East Midlands recorded our 2013 Awards Day, and the appearance of main presenter Anne Davies added to the excitement of the day.
Fashion for Free 2014 – ‘Whatever the Weather’
This year’s competition theme is designed to highlight the impact of the weather on our planet.
Pupils are asked to design, create & decorate a wearable garment, hat, bag or belt with a ‘Weather’ style theme using colour and texture to depict the weather or invoke the mood and drama which weather creates. The brief is designed to stimulate resourcefulness, creativity, innovation and originality and all entries will be judged on these qualities.
Celebrate your creativity, use your design skills and have fun!
The only rule is you don’t spend any money!
Reduce – Recycle – Re-use.
Find things around the house or school and recycle them into your design so remember to think creatively about what can be given a new lease of life.

Comments on our previous Fashion for Free! competitions:
“We really value working with local employers and taking part in competitions like Fashion for Free!, which allows our students to design and create items to a brief, as they would in a working environment. The students took a lot away from this experience and those, who might be considering going into fashion in the future, will have a better understanding of how the industry operates.” - Kathy Mountford, teacher at Heanor Gate Science College
“Because we design and make all our women’s fashion here in Derbyshire, we need to encourage young people into the industry. This competition is all about passing on skills to the next generation, and with the outstanding talent seen here today, we have a very promising and skilled workforce of the future.” - Christopher Nieper, Managing Director
