A New Golden Age of NightwearApril 2019
When evening falls, most of us don’t spend too much time thinking about what to wear to bed. But there’s a change in the air, with many of today’s nightdress styles showing a return to the romance and femininity of nightwear’s ‘golden age’.
The nightdress had humble beginnings. Centuries ago, women wore simple linen smocks. Wealthier women sometimes added a nightcap to their sleeping ensemble. But Victorian designers began to think of nightdresses differently. Embellishments such as lace and bows began to appear. Some Victorian ladies were shocked at this, as it implied their nightdress might be seen by someone else!Shop nightdresses
By the Roaring Twenties, women were beginning to rebel against the conservative dress codes of previous generations. Flapper-style fringes appeared on nightwear and new fabrics such as colourful, soft satins arrived. After a hiatus during wartime, thoughts again turned to luxury and romance in the post-war years. A new designer rose to prominence. Famous for creating opulent couture gowns, Christian Dior changed the look of nightwear with long elegant nightdresses embellished with detailed lace and embroidery. From that point on, nightdresses became the beautiful and utterly feminine garments we love today.Shop nightdresses
Today’s nightwear has become more delicate and dreamy once again, thanks, no doubt, to the influence of some of our most-loved stories of times gone by. Poldark’s Demelza, the Crawleys of Downton Abbey and a young Princess Victoria have had designers everywhere sketching timeless cotton nightdresses, with gossamer lace and flowing silhouettes. It’s such a graceful look, inspired by the natural, relaxed beauty of those moments just before bed.Shop nightdresses
The advantage that women have today, is that we can enjoy the gloriously ladylike appearance of the golden age, with all the comfort and convenience of premium, luxury fabrics. So when you choose the long, flowing nightdress that looks so divine, you know it will also feel blissfully soft against your skin and offer a wonderful night’s sleep. Of course, this has been a signature style for us here at David Nieper since we began making nightwear in 1961; our love of beautiful nightdresses is no brief flirtation – it’s a true romance.Shop nightdresses
