Sunny days and clear skies are usually a welcome addition to our lives, with the summer season putting a spring in everyone’s step. Warm weather can cause special occasions to be even more joyful, and make strolling out and about in our favourite summer outfits a real pleasure.
The downside, however, is the impact hot weather can have on our sleep. However much we may benefit from a run of sunny days, nobody enjoys feeling hot and bothered, especially when it’s time to sleep.
Try these five simple tips for keeping your cool in the nighttime heat, so you can sleep better and wake up refreshed.

Stay hydrated
Drinking plenty of water during the day will help you fight the heat at night. Dehydration is a common cause of insomnia, but leaving it until the evening to catch up on your water intake is too little too late. Try to sip water regularly throughout the day, which will help your body regulate its temperature at night.

Keep your (home) cool
Although it’s tempting to throw the curtains wide open in the heat, your house will benefit more from keeping the sun off it during the day. Keep blinds or curtains closed on whichever side of your home that is facing the sun, switching this around accordingly. Open windows will still let a breeze through, and you should find your bedroom stays cooler without having had the sun beat down on it during the day.
Dress tactically
The material of your nightwear will influence how cool and comfortable you feel in bed. During the warmer months, cotton fabrics let your skin breathe and keep you cooler than man made fabrics or silks. Choosing nightwear in breathable cottons will optimise your chances of a comfortable night’s sleep. Choosing loose fit floaty and sleeveless nightdresses will help keep you cool, and they’re also lovely for wearing around the house too when it’s time to relax.

Be a routine queen
Because heat can make falling asleep difficult, it’s important to give your body all the help you can to nod off. This means keeping your usual routine as far as possible, which will stop your body clock becoming confused. Try to go to bed at your usual time, and avoid naps if you don’t usually take one. Doing this will encourage your body to follow its usual natural pattern of sleep and wakefulness.
Climb into bed cool

When you get into bed feeling overheated, it’s much harder to cool down than if you start the night refreshed. Try taking a cool shower at night and begin your sleep mission at the right temperature.
Using thin cotton sheets on your bed will also help keep it (and you) cooler. Linen bedding is often a better choice in the summer season, offering you light cover in the night as your body temperature drops, without causing you to overheat.
